in memory of jim catanzaro

In 2019, our tournament lost a beloved member of our family. Jim Catanzaro, husband of Rita and brother-in-law to Debbie and Tom, lost his battle with cancer.

Jim was a member of the DRS tournament team from the very beginning. While not known for his golfing expertise (although he could hold his own on the course), Jim was better know to our participants as the grill master who provided our wonderful lunch for the past several years.

He was also the guy who was first to arrive to setup for our event and the last to leave after cleaning up.

In honor of Jim, Rita provided a one time $2,000 scholarship this year in Jim's name to be given to a high school graduate heading off to a technical course of study. The recipient of this scholarship is Aaron Prescott (pictured with Tom, Debbie and Rita) who will major in Auto/Diesel/Agricultural Welding at the Tulsa Welding School.

Congratulations to Aaron.

Jim - we miss you!

Scholarship Criteria

Beginning in 2024, we have increased the yearly scholarship amount from $1,500 to $2,000. The scholarship (renewable for four years) is awarded to a student athlete at New Richmond High School.  Prior to 2014, the yearly scholarship was $1,000.  The criteria required for this scholarship are as follows:

    - grade point average of 3.0 or higher

    - competitive athlete who demonstrates leadership ability with good sportsmanlike conduct

    - student who has concerns for others and has high moral standards and ethics

    - soccer or tennis player

The above criteria was chosen for David's scholarship because David was a:

    - team leader in any sport that he played

    - rather quiet person, but always seemed to have a strong following of people that looked to him for leadership

    - competitive person while maintaining a sportsmanship attitude

    - team captain for New Richmond's soccer team during his junior and senior years

    - person willing to help those who were less fortunate, both on and off the field

    - student who excelled in the classroom, carrying a 3.89 GPA during his senior year

    - member of the National Honor Society in his junior and senior years

    - student elected to attend Boys State in Bowling Green, Ohio in his sophomore year
